Al Junaid said “Patience is to keep calmly content while facing affliction”

Dhu-Nuun said “It is to restrain yourself from ill conduct & to remain quiet during affliction without complaining.”

Abu Uthman said “The one who has patience is the one who has trained himself to handle hardships.”

`Amr Ibn `Uthman al-Makki said “Patience means to keep close to Allaah and to accept calmly the trails He sends, without complaining or feeling sad.”

Al Khawwas said “Patience is to adhere to the injuctions of the Qur’an and Sunnah.”

Ruwaim said “Patience means to refrain from complaining”

Another scholar said “Patience means to seek Allah’s help.”

Abu Mohammed al Hariri said “Patience means that there is no difference in behavior in times of prosperity and that of adversity and to be content at all times.”

However, man by nature prefers prosperity and when he is met with affliction, which is inevitable, he reacts naturally with complaints and being sad. That’s normal. It’s not to say that we should never complain and never be sad. But complianing comes in two forms. One is accepatable, the other is not. Complaining to Allah is acceptable and it doens’t contradict the definition of being patient.

The Qur’an states the words of Ya’aqub peace and blessings be upon him “I only complain of my distractions and anguish to Allah” [Yusuf:86]

In the Qur’an Ayyub peace and blessings be upon him, is described as patient; However the Qur’an states the following words of him “Truly distress has seized me” [Al Anbiyaa:83]

The Prophet Mohammed Peace and blessings be upon him complained to Allaah subhanahu wa ta’ala saying “O Allaah, I complain to You of my weakness and helplessness.”

Musa peace and blessings be upon him prayed to Allaah saying “Oh Allah, Praise is to You, and complaint is made only to You. You are the only One whose help we seek, and in whom we put our trust, and there is no power or might except yours.”

Subhan’Allah, they were all described as patient, but they complained…difference being is that they complained to Allaah subhanahu wa ta’ala. That doesn’t contradict that you’re not patient, it shows how patient you are in only complaining to Allaah alone.

The unacceptable form of complaint is complaining to the people(through speech/behavior) about Allaah; which may feel good to vent all your problems and situations to, but in reality it brings no benefit. People have their own problems themselves & the only help one truly has is the help of Allaah . He is your Creator; and the Creator created the creations, and therefore is the only supply of help. The creations can help each other, by the Help of Allaah, so in essence, it’s all through Allaah. Complaining to people shows impatience and mistrust in Allaah, while complaining to Allaah and seeking His help to render you successful in times of hardship, is what’s beneficial.
